Getting Here and Around
Airport (Christopher Colombus)
Is in the western part of town, should cost about a 20€ taxi in to the centre.
There is also a bus that takes you to the centre – volabus 3€ one way. It leaves about once an hour.
If any of you are flying in to Milan (Malpensa, Linate, Bergamo) its still easy to get here. Jump on a shuttle bus from the airport (should cost €5-6) to Milano Centrale train station. From there catch a train to Genova. There’s usually at least one train per hour and you can buy tickets up to the last minute at the automatic ticket machines or counter. The end of the line is usually La Spezia or Ventimiglia so don’t be concerned if there isn’t a train listed specifically for Genova!!!
Trains and buses
The main train station in Genova is Stazione Principe which is happily about 10 minutes walk away from us
Trains are frequent, but can be slow, and are often late. Still, they are a cheap and easy way to get around!
You can get interstate trains from Principe – for example one way to Rome on eurostar sets you back about 37€. There are plenty of automatic ticket machines in the station, with the option to use them in English and are an efficient way to get your interstate/interregional tickets – highly recommended!
From Genova, you can easily reach the following cities;
- Camogli - 45min
- Chiavari - 1 hour
- Cinque Terra - 1 hour 45 mins
- Milano - 1 hour 30 mins
- Pisa - 2 hours 30 mins
- Frienze (Florence) - 3 hours
- Roma - 5 hours
- Nice (France) - 3 hours
Check out Trenitalia - there is an English translation option!
The main transport provider in Genova is AMT. There are several different types of tickets you can buy, all are valid for travel within the metro region of Genova (between Genova Voltri to the west and Nervi to the east). These tickets are valid on trains, the metro and buses.
Bigletto ordinario: 1.20€ valid for 90mins after validation
Bigletto giorno: 4€ daily
Abbonamento settiminale: 12€ weekly
Carnet di 10 bigletti: 11€ pack of 10 bigletti ordinari
Taxis
It is illegal to hail a cab, but taxi ranks are not lacking, if in doubt, find the nearest train station.
Unfortunately they have excess charges for luggage. If your bag is 20kg or more (and they will argue that it is! no matter what the scales at the airport said) you will be charged an extra 3€ on your fare.
